Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Your Study Permit in Canada

Dreaming of Studying in Canada?

Here’s How to Get Your Study Permit!

So, you’ve decided to study in Canada—great choice! With world-class education, diverse communities, and excellent post-graduate opportunities, Canada is one of the best places for international students. But before you pack your bags and book that flight, you need a study permit. If the application process feels overwhelming, don’t worry—we’ve got your back!

Here’s your step-by-step guide to getting your study permit with ease.

Why Study in Canada?

Canada is not just about breathtaking landscapes and friendly people—it’s also a top choice for international students because of:

  • High-quality education 🏫 – Canada is home to some of the best universities and colleges worldwide.

  • Work opportunities 💼 – You can work part-time during your studies and full-time during scheduled breaks.

  • Pathway to Permanent Residency (PR) 🇨🇦 – Many programs allow you to transition from a student visa to PR status.

  • Welcoming environment 🤝 – Canada is known for its inclusivity and support for international students.

  • Affordable education 💰 – Compared to other top study destinations, tuition fees and living costs are reasonable, especially in Atlantic Canada.

Now that you’re convinced, let’s dive into the application process!

📌 Study Permit Application: Step-by-Step Checklist

1️⃣ Get Accepted into a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) 🏫

Before applying for a study permit, you must receive an acceptance letter from a Canadian institution listed as a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Check the official list here.

2️⃣ Gather Your Required Documents 📂

You’ll need the following:

✅ Valid Passport (Make sure it’s not expiring soon!)

✅ Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from your school

✅ Proof of Sufficient Funds (to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation)

✅ Immigration Medical Exam (IME) (if required, depending on your country)

✅ Statement of Purpose (SOP) explaining your study plans and future goals

✅ Police Clearance Certificate (if requested by IRCC)

3️⃣ Apply Online for Your Study Permit 💻

Head to the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website to submit your application: Apply Here

🔹 Create an account on the IRCC portal.

🔹 Upload all required documents.

🔹 Pay the application fee ($150 CAD).

🔹 Submit your application and wait for updates.

4️⃣ Provide Biometrics & Attend an Interview (if required) 🖐️

You may need to visit a Visa Application Center (VAC) to submit your biometrics (fingerprints and photo). In some cases, an interview may be required at your nearest Canadian embassy or consulate.

5️⃣ Wait for Processing & Get Your Study Permit ✉️

Processing times vary by country, so check current timelines here.

If approved, you’ll receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction—this is NOT your study permit yet! You’ll get your actual study permit when you arrive in Canada.

6️⃣ Prepare for Arrival in Canada ✈️

Before you fly, make sure you have:

✅ Your passport and visa

✅ Letter of Introduction from IRCC

✅ Proof of tuition payment

✅ Accommodation details
